thanksgiving in london-town

getting ready for turkey day is always fun. making sure you have all the recipes and ingredients on hand to prep the feast can be time consuming and a bit daunting. add to that mix trying to celebrate thanksgiving in london, and you've got yourself a problem. after tracking down a shop that sells canned pumpkin, and figuring out the conversion of fahrenheit to celsius, i was finally able to test-run my pumpkin pie (recipe below) before the big day! here are the results.

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 pure maple syrup
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • large eggs
  • 1can (15 oz.) Canned Pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
  • can (12 fl. oz.) Evaporated Milk
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch (4-cup volume) deep-dish pie shell

MIX sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, salt, ginger and cloves in small bowl. Beat eggs in large bowl. Stir in pumpkin and sugar-spice mixture. Gradually stir in evaporated milk.

POUR into pie shell.

BAKE in preheated 425° F oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350° F; bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until knife inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 2 hours. Serve immediately or refrigerate. Top with whipped cream before serving.

california dreamin' & d'angelo's

on a cold november day like today in london, we are california dreamin'! the golden state's majestic coastlines and sunny weather are calling us home - but one thing in particular has our interest peaked! yes, we are dreaming of the egg rose from d'angelo's in santa barbara. SB, being one of our favorite places to kick back, relax, and enjoy the surf, is also the home of one of the west coast, if not the countries best bakeries. the freshly baked kalamata olive bread, topped with a thin coat of house made artichoke spread, and adorned with two perfectly poached eggs. oh, if only we could do the egg rose right now.

d'angelo, we love you!

happy 50th bond, james bond

what do you get when you take a tuxedo, a gun, and a really gorgeous silver sports car? the new james bond movie that's what! skyfall, now out in cinemas in the uk, is everything we hoped it would be and more. the super tight plot that leads daniel craig's bond on a mission to save M and uncover who is plotting to assistant her, as well as undo MI6, is thrilling, action packed, but not too over the top to be unrealistic. this new generation of bond introduces updated versions of classic bond elements, from the silver aston martin, to moneypenny, to the bringing back of the much loved bond 'gadgets', there is a little bit for everyone. but perhaps the best part of skyfall is the villian. javier bardem, a man born to be bad, delivers a tour de force performance that is nuanced with by bardem's subtly sinister personae. there are plot twists, murders, terrific special effects, fight scenes that make you feel like you just took a sucker punch, and of course - bond girls. skyfall should not be missed on the big screen! by far the best bond yet! happy 50th mr. bond!

ode to the 1990s

if you grew up in the 90s, then you remember that all the cool girls wore backpack purses. there you'd be, in your guess jeans, your lisa frank stickers pressed to your arm like some rebel tattoo, and your backpack purse slung on one shoulder cause you were just too cool to wear it on both shoulders. well ladies and gents, fear no more - that ever-cool wardrobe staple is making a comeback on the runway. here is a cute little ditty that the folks at pour la victoire cooked up! enjoy.

don't be a super rat, be darling!

it's the same every halloween, the date of october 31st slowly approaches and you realize that you have nothing to wear to the next costume (or if you are in the UK - fancy dress) party! it seems like for most girls out there, halloween has become a license to turn any profession into a slutty costume - i give you the naughty nurse, the 'bad' cop, the secretary, etc...hey, we are not judging - but why not do something just as sexy, but dare we say classy at the same time? instead of dawning lingerie and a tie and calling your self a lawyer - why not take a classic character known for her style prowess and snappy quips? and yes, before you say - everyone has done holly golightly costumes do death - why not chose one of her lesser worn ensembles. . . the iconic scene in the film "breakfast at tiffany's" when george peppard and audrey hepburn meet is one in which she wears a men's tuxedo shirt, tasseled earplugs, and her one of a kind eye mask. we've put the look together for you and even let you know where you can find all the pieces. . . enjoy!

eye mask available at Mary Green

friday at frieze

yes ladies and gents, it is that time of year again - time for the frieze art fair in london. frieze, which opened this week at london's beautiful regents park, is massive to say the least. the scale of frieze has expanded exponentially since its inception, and literally is a feast for the is the art equivalent of a swanky sunday brunch buffet- a little bit of everything for you to sample - just don't over do it or you will be sorry. after four hours wandering the tents - i most definitely began to feel the art fatigue setting in and was in much need of a double shot of espresso in  order to power through. there was a lot to take in, but there were a few genuine moments of wonderful. from jeppe hein, allen ruppesberg, and even damien hurst, there were some mega-watt names on display. frieze is a love/hate event - love to see the amazing work - but also have to work you way through a lot of not so great art at the same time...if you go, make sure you give yourself enough time to wander - and don't forget your camera!
